EMISSIONS REPAIR:

What is an Emissions Test?

In order to be registered in the state of Illinois, your vehicle must pass an emissions test. This test is required to ensure all vehicles meet federal and state emissions standards. The emissions test helps reduce air pollution from motor vehicles in the state areas as part of the Illinois EPA’s strategy to reduce air pollution in Illinois and bring the Chicago and Metro-East areas into attainment of the ozone NAAQS. Vehicles must undergo emissions tests every two years at a state testing facility.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency:

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency recommend that vehicles be repaired by a Recognized Repair Technician. We are trained, experienced and equipped to repair emissions-related failures. The diagnosis and repair of emissions problems has emerged as a specialty in automotive repair and can involve the repair or replacement of multiple components.

Check Engine Light On:

When your Check Engine light is on is an indication that you can have a problem in your engine or exhaust system and you may need help to decipher the cue because it’s part of the OBD System. The On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) is a computerized system that monitors the vehicle’s emission controls; this system includes self-diagnostic and reporting functions. One of them is to trigger the Check engine light for a variety of issues, from the fuel cap to the catalytic converter; indicating the need to replace one or more parts of your engine or exhaust system.

How do I know if my Vehicle is due for an Emissions Test?

You can find out when your vehicle is due for an emissions test by entering the VIN or license plate number into the ILLINOIS AIR TEAM website.

How Long do you have to Test your vehicle?

If your vehicle is due for testing and your plates are expired, please take your vehicle to the nearest Illinois Air Team facility. Waiting until the end of October, when the extensions are expected to end, could result in heavy traffic and long wait times.

Flashing Light On:

When you have a flashing light on the dashboard may be indicative of an emission system problem with your vehicle that is in need of immediate attention to avoid poor fuel mileage performance and to prevent unwanted automotive pollutants from entering the atmosphere.

What is the OBD test?

The OBD test consists of connecting a scan tool to a vehicle’s onboard computer to determine the OBD system status (readiness checks), to determine whether the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is commanded to be illuminated, and to retrieve any stored diagnostic trouble codes.
